Job Summary

This is NOT a vacancy announcement. By completing the application, you are joining a repository of interested applicants who will be considered to fill current and future Information Technology Specialist – Forensic Examiner opportunities. Additional selections may be made to fill positions with similar duties, responsibilities and qualifications.

Position: Information Technology Specialist – Forensic Examiner GS 7/9/11/12/13

Locations: Opportunities Available Nationwide

Working Hours: 8:15am 5:00pm, but hours may vary

Salary: Rates will be provided upon selection

Duration: Full Time/Permanent

Major Duties:

  • Plans, coordinates, and directs forensic science activities to include expert examinations, reporting of results, training, and research that involve all aspects of digital evidence.
  • Inventories, examines, retrieves, and performs comprehensive technical analyses of digital evidence without altering original.
  • Prepares evidence for examination from crime scene.
  • Develops and provides evidence collection and examination agencies.
  • Serves as technical consultant by providing up-to-date training in computer examinations detailing the latest technology, supporting information, and reviews of new products to agents, federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.
  • May be required to testify in court as to the procedures and methods used to obtain data.
  • Prepares and furnishes authoritative oral and written reports on opinions and finding to stakeholders within the law enforcement community.

Education Requirement

Have at least 24 college level semester hours from an accredited college or university in one or more of the following disciplines:

  • Computer Science, Engineering, Information Science, Information Systems Management/Analysis, Math/Statistics, Operations Research, Technology Management, Computer/Digital/Electronic Forensics, Information Technology Systems, Data Structure and Design

AND one of the following:

  • A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in one or more of the fields identified above;

OR,

  • Six (6) years of full-time experience working as either a technician or forensic examiner (consistent with FBI digital evidence program definitions) within a digital evidence facility that supports criminal investigations, and has an external accreditation or internal quality assurance framework.

Additional Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must have (or be able to obtain) a valid drivers license
  • Must be able to obtain a Top Secret-SCI clearance
  • Some travel may be required
  • Must verify completion of the basic education requirement by submitting a copy of college transcripts

Specialized Experience (SE):

GS 7: SE is defined as follows:

  • Experienced in programming language codes, operating IT consoles, monitors, and/or installing, maintaining, configuring, or optimizing operating systems, databases or networks.
  • Communicated orally regarding IT matters.

GS 9: SE is defined as follows:

  • Determined hardware/software capabilities
  • Performed data searches and retrievals from storage devices and protected media; copied evidence, ensured chain-of-custody and storage of evidence
  • Communicated orally and in writing regarding IT matters

GS 11: SE is defined as follows:

  • Acquired and ensured safety of computer-related evidence
  • Established hardware and software interfaces using commercial programs and equipment
  • Developed and used investigative techniques and support methods
  • Employed programming and algorithmic designs
  • Developed and used investigative techniques and support methods

GS 12: SE is defined as follows:

  • Experience which has demonstrated the accomplishment of information technology (IT) projects requiring forensic examination of computer, digital, and similar media and equipment using a wide range of knowledge of IT and evidentiary techniques resulting in the acquisition, examination, and/or presentation of computer-related evidence for investigative purposes.
  • Acquire and ensure safety of computer-related evidence.
  • Established hardware and software interfaces using commercial programs and equipment.
  • Developed and used investigative techniques and support methods
  • Employed programming and algorithmic designs.
  • Experience in evidentiary techniques resulting in the acquisition, examination, or/presentation of computer related evidence for investigative purposes.

GS 13: SE is defined as follows:

  • Experience in advanced information technology (IT) projects requiring complex and difficult forensic examination of computer, digital, and similar media and equipment using a wide range of IT knowledge.
  • Identify, diagnose, and correct problem conditions to aid in the retrieval of data in complicated situations.
  • Performed technical analyses of evidence in all types of difficult and complex cases.
  • Prepared and furnished authoritative oral and written reports to investigators which convey the opinions and findings. Presented necessary court testimony.
